syn. Millionaire's Salad
(Rhopalostylis sapida) The leaves were once used by the Maori to thatch houses, wrap food for cooking & weave into hats, mats, baskets, and leggings. From the outer portion of the trunk, Māori made storage containers and pots. Berries were made into necklaces or eaten when green. Immature flowers are edible and can be cooked and eaten like cauliflower. On occasion Maori would eat the central leaf bud (the succulent heart) - early European settlers then called this the “Millionaire's Salad” because removal of the heart cost the palm its life. Evergreen.  Ht 10m if outside but extremely slow growing and often is kept as a houseplant.
