(Ociumum basilicum)
A variety of Basil plants are grown here at Stonehurst - all require warmth and full sun with adequate warm water (water from the base for best growing results). Great in pots. Young shoots are a tasty addition to salads and soups also used fresh or dried and in pesto. Ask what variety is available today!
Varieties listed below:
BASIL DARK OPAL: Highly ornamental Basil with dark purple foliage. Use as other sweet group Basils. Excellent for adding color to summer salads.
GIANT GENOVEASE: Mammoth Leaf. A large leaf variety of the excellent standard Genovese Basil strain. A distinct advantage where growing space is at a premium and a large quantity of fresh Basil foliage may be required.
LETTUCE LEAF: The strongest and most highly prolific variety of culinary basil. The large leaves up to 10cm long by 8cm wide have smooth edges with crinkled centers, which look like small Lettuce leaves.
LIME MRS BURNS: Great to infuse dishes with both a lime and basil flavor at the same time! Well drained moist soil in sunny position. Great in pots.
SWEET GENOVEASE : Broad leaved Sweet Indian Basil. Large fine flavored Basil with shiny green leaves.
THAI BASIL: A beautiful ornamental, as well as culinary, Basil which has a very sweet anise-like fragrance, used extensively in Thai cuisine. The leaves are green at the base of the plant but may be purplish near the lavender/white flowers. Ht 45cm.
