(Isatis tinctoria)

An important herb for Mankind since the Neolithic (Stone Age) Period from which to make blue dye. As a part of the brassica family, it grows a long tap root and a rosette of leaves. In autumn, once the leaves begin to wither, the whole leafy rosette is cut off at ground level then pounded & fermented to extract the blue crystal 'Indigton'. Two or three annual harvests are possible from the resprouting tap root. Flowers are a mass of airy yellow blooms for bees and pollinators to enjoy. Sunny, fertile, well drained soil with good air flow. Biennial. Ht 1m
