syn. Canary Balm OR Canary Island Flower (Cedronella canariensis)

This plant is a semi hardy perennial with compound leaves that smell strongly of citronella and balsam but it should not to be confused with the biblical Balm of Gilead which is actually a small tree, Populus balsamifera.
While this version of Balm of Gilead is not typically used in cooking it is used in a special tea from the Canary Islands from where this plant orginates called 'Thé de Canaries' (Translate: Canary Tea). This tea is reputedly anti-spasmodic and calming only the leaves being used, these are best harvested and dried before flowering occurs (Thé de Canaries: Boil water. Steep 1 tsp. dried Balm of Gilead  per 250ml for 7 min. Strain & serve)
The strong aroma of this Balm of Gilead have also made it popular as a decongestant for the respiratory tract and for treating other respiratory issues such as asthma or bronchitis either by drinking infused tea or with aromatherapy (a couple of teaspoons of the dried herb to a bowl of fresh boiled water can scent a whole room).
The leaves are antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial as well as being a reasonably good insect deterrent. Sprinkle some of the fresh herb throughout chickens nesting boxes to help deter mites.
Dried leaves can add a musky woody scent to any pot-pourri mix.
Prefers moist well-drained soil in semi-shade to full sun with some shelter from direct hot summer sun. Protect from harsh frost. Perennial. Ht 1- 1.5m
NOTE: At this stage there is no known/found medicinal research that supports these medicinal claims but this plant has been used  in folk medicine for centuries and is still used today!
