(Papaver somniferum) syn. Breadseed Poppy. A valuable ornamental plant with beautiful flowers in shades of white, pale-dark pink, reds or deep purple. Seeds are used in cooking (poppy seeds) for cakes, bread, fruit salads etc. and are perfectly safe to eat. A wide range of alkaloids can be extracted from the opium poppy for medicines - particularly for pain relief, such medicines should only ever be administered by a qualified medical practitioner as they are highly addictive.
