A useful companion plant as it has insecticidal properties, and its pungent scent can mask the smell of other plants. Traditionally, used for flavour as well as a carminative, added to bean dishes to help reduce gas and bloating during digestion. Cooking: 1-2T of chopped fresh leaves or 1t of dried leaves to 450g of beans. Leaves dark green with jagged edges, stems turning reddish with age. Half-hardy annual. Tolerates wind and coastal sites. Full sun. Well drained soils.
